What is R.E.A.C.H.?

R.E.A.C.H. (Recreation Empowering Active Community Helpers) is a youth initiative under the City of Ottawa’s Youth Connexion program. Our goal is to provide a fun and welcoming environment for students to work towards and complete their 40-hours of community involvement while becoming active members of the community. Students will work with a youth mentor and work as a team to plan events within their community. Students will meet with each other and a mentor (meeting times are flexible)1-2 times per week. During these meetings they will plan a special event, as well as brainstorm how to make positive change within their community.

The R.E.A.C.H. program gives students an opportunity to have ownership over their community involvement experience. Many volunteer opportunities for youth are simply predetermined roles that simply get students the hours they require without giving them a real understanding of what community involvement truly means. Our program provides a chance for students to make decisions and gain valuable experience that can give them more confidence in their abilities when entering the job market.

Goals:

• Offer students a safe and fun environment to complete community involvement hours

• Help students make a difference in their community

• Give students a sense of pride within their community
